Spain
Queen Isabel II
Jubia mint

"The earliest coins bearing Isabel’s image were likely inspired by the young queen’s appearance at court wearing
a pearl necklace and earrings with her hair pulled up into a bun topped by a small crown of pearls. The royal engraver,
Mariano González Sepúlveda, created dies depicting Isabel II in a similar manner on
copper, silver, and gold coins of the Kingdom period.
She was also portrayed thus in a contemporary portrait called
Isabel II niña painted by Carlos Ruiz de Ribera. Later coins would also reflect her changing hairstyles. As she entered her twenties, and for much of the rest of her reign, Isabel often wore her hair in a looped braid similar to that seen on coins of the 1
st
, 2
nd
, and 3
rd
Decimal periods. At various times throughout her reign, Isabel also often wore a peineta which rose from the back of the collar and supported a mantilla (veil over head and shoulders)."
- excerpted from The Coins of Queen Isabel II of Spain
Political conflict between Isabel
’
s mother and the Cortes (Spain’s parliamentary body) resulted in Isabel being elevated to Queen much earlier than was conventional. She formally assumed full royal authority in 1843 at age 13. At the time this coin was issued Queen Isabel II was 17 years old, had been married less than a year, and had already been participating in governance of Spain as queen for almost 4 years.
This 4 maravedis is a piece of the tumultuous history surrounding the young queen’s reign and Spain’s painful transition from ancient tradition to the modern era.
