    Item Description
    1867                               1 escudo

The larger silver coins of this period were heavily exported for melting or bullion trade throughout Isabel's reign. The 1 escudo coins fared  better than the larger 2 escudo coins, but nevertheless many of those that survived are heavily circulated, cleaned, or damaged. Finding an eye appealing example, impaired or otherwise, is challenging.

The new monetary unit was called “escudo”. The weight and purity of the silver coins was, as ever, a central issue. After decades of export of Spanish silver coins, especially the large silver duro (20 reales) that was heavier than similar silver coins of other nations, the Spanish government left the weight and purity of that coin unchanged. They did, however, formally reduce the weight of the escudo, as compared with its 10 reales predecessor, from 13.15g to 12.98g. They also reduced the purity of the 10, 20, and 40 céntimos de escudo (formerly 1, 2, 4 reales) to 0.810 fine silver. Particularly notable in this decree is the statement of coin weights in grams rather than a number of coins per marco. This was the first time that Spain had decreed the weight of its coins exclusively in terms of the metric system. Even the denominations are decimalized, as the end of Article 6 makes it clear that 1, 10, and 100 reales are the primary coinage while all others are auxiliary.”
    - excerpted from The Coins of Queen Isabel II of Spain
This short-lived, four year type was the primary monetary unit of Spain from 1865 to 1868. The escudo had previously been known as the unit of gold coinage in the pre-decimal era, but in 1865 the “escudo” replaced “reales” as the primary monetary unit of Spain. In 1869 it was be replaced by “peseta” which remained the primary unit until the “euro” arrived at the end of the late 20th century.
These coins are adorned by the beautiful rendition of Queen Isabel II by Luis Marchionni, identified by the L.M. at the truncation of the neck. His artistic and engraving skill marks him among the greatest engravers in Spain’s history.
This particular piece is lustrous with a hint of wear on Isabel’s hair.
